About 52% of houses in Turkey insured against earthquakes.
Effective 01 January 2020, new procedures will be implemented by the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool.
The location and height of the building, as well as the date of construction, will affect the amount of insurance.
It has been 20 years since the Marmara earthquake, in which hundreds of thousands of people died.
But so far, only 51.7% of houses in turkey are insured against earthquakes, and the number of houses insured 9 million.
According to the latest news, the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool (DASK) will make important innovations in compulsory earthquake insurance as of 01 January 2020.
The pricing model will change completely according to the New Turkish Seismic Hazard Map and according to the risk groups.
At the same time, there will be changes according to the characteristics of the building. There will be a difference in insurance cost for houses built before 2000 and those built after this date.
In addition, other factors such as the structure of the house, its location, and the new risk map will be considered. There will be a special assessment of the building.
In short, costs will be determined according to building characteristics, resources and ground conditions.
Houses that have been subject to urban transformation will also be evaluated differently. Lower prices can be set for low-rise buildings.
Increase insurance amounts
The maximum insurance compensation that can be offered to homes which have Compulsory Earthquake Insurance increased from 190 thousand TL to 215 thousand TL regardless of the structure pattern.
This confirms that insurance costs will change by the beginning of next year.
The insurance price for steel, reinforced concrete, and carcass structures was raised from 890 to 1020 TL, for masonry structures from 635 to 725 TL, and for other structures from 310 to 355 TL.
According to the new regulations, the minimum premium amount was increased and became not less than 110, 80, 60, 50 and 40 TL (from the 1st region to the 5th region respectively) while these amounts were 95, 70, 55, 45 and 35 TL.
The insurance cost for buildings built in 2000 and before will be increased by 10%.
The insurance cost will be reduced by 10% for buildings with 3 floors or less, and the insurance cost will increase by 10% for buildings with more than 8 floors.
The ground and basement floors will not be included in the number of floors.
If the insurance is renewed within 30 days of the end of the policy period, a 10% discount will be applied.
